Finally cancelled ADT

Just a little victory lap for me.  I finally reached out to ADT and cancelled their service today.  I've been giving Simplisafe a good run before cancelling ADT and so far it's worked well for me.  I've been expanding the system with more sensors.  When I purchased the system back at the end of November, I bought the exact same set up that I had with ADT.  Over the last two months, I've put entry sensors on every window, a second keypad in the bedroom, and a siren on each level of my home.  I also added two cameras.  I've basically spent the same amount on all of my new sensors (with SAVETHIRTY) that I did on the original system that I got half off.  To me it's worth it.  One of my biggest complaints about ADT is that it was not possible for me to purchase and add sensors as I wanted.  I would have to pay for the sensor and then pay a trip charge for them to come out and install them.  And when I got the "free" system, they included the bare minimum sensors.  The only entry sensors were on doors and they relied on motion sensors almost entirely.  I think that my experience with ADT might have been a bit colored by the fact that I signed on with one of the ADT representative companies and they were really shifty.  All sales, no support.

The only real problem that I had with ADT was the price.  Their service was fantastic.  It was never down a single day in the six years that I was with them and the few times that I accidentally set off an alarm, they called me almost immediately.  In the entire six years, I've only had to change an entry sensor battery once and never had to change batteries for any of their motion sensors or glass break sensors.  I also liked that my keypad was hardwired with a battery backup.  I am connected to their system by cellular that has never had a single second of trouble.  Over the six years, however, they virtually doubled their price.  The latest increase was just a few months ago and that's what finally got me into the DIY security system game.

All issues with non-existent support aside, the SS system really has a lot going for it.  Being able to modify my configuration whenever I want is great.  I have a lot more control over my SS system than I ever did over my ADT system.  And C.O.P.S is amazing.  I put the system in Test mode and within a second, I get a text message telling me it's in test.  Within ten seconds, I get a call from them letting me know that my system was put into test.  Every single time.  And I have been testing my system a lot over the last couple of months.  I also like the simplicam visual verification.  Sure the cameras aren't the best, don't have the best resolution, etc, but they are beyond adequate for visual verification.

Anyway, I was surprised at how easy it was to cancel ADT.  I got a bit of pushback but I just insisted that I didn't really need the alarm and just wanted to save the money.  I didn't get any arguments after that.  Of course I will watch my CC bill to make sure I'm not billed anymore and will take appropriate steps if I do.

@usmaak I will spare you and others my ADT stories (if you want to be bored, you can do a Google site search and read my 7+ years of hatred for ADT) but congrats. Also, as you noted, you don't own the system and by contract you are legally required to return to them.  I had to send a certified letter, return receipt, when they refused and gave them 30 days to come and get it or it was going into the trash.  To put it simply, they suck.  Worst day at SS was better than any day with ADT.

Congrats of breaking free!

Oh, one more thing.....check your credit cards for the foreseeable future. I did and glad I did the reviews.

That is not the case with my system.  It says right in my contract that after the expiration of my contract (three years ago now) that I own the system.  I printed a copy of the contract out and had it handy so that I could refer to it if I needed to.

@usmaak  definitely different than mine. Appears ADT is getting more honest?

I don't know.  I got my system six years ago.  Perhaps they are.  Or maybe it had more to do with the affiliate I signed with.

@usmaak, very well could be.  After I cancelled, in writing, they billed me another month, saying it was a "courtesy billing" inc I changed my mind. LOL. They credited it, and then next month I got a late payment fee. It was a nightmare to break away from them.

^ I had a similar experience with a certain telephone company.  After I fired them, moved into a new house and the fencing crew cut the phone line, the phone company came out and reamed me a good one because I told them I didn't want their service and I don't care if the line is cut, I'll never use it.  (and like ADT, their billing practices were a horror show).  To think I actually considered (very briefly, like an hour) going with ADT in the new house.  Glad my brain was working that day!

I would not sign up for a 3 year contract with anyone!  Love our Simplisafe system.

Much less a contract with an automatic renewal and the only way to avoid the renewal is to do exactly the right thing at exactly the right time.
