SimpliCam Taking Video Without Permission

On the website when I purchased the SimpliCam it says "SimpliCam was built with a stainless steel privacy shutter to give you complete control over your privacy. The privacy shutter only opens with your permission. It protects your video feed with the same level of encryption used by banks to protect their accounts." I found this compelling enough to get over my level of discomfort re: having a camera in the house, and it's been nice to check in on the dog when I'm out. However, it doesn't say anywhere that the system is forced to take a minute long video whenever you disarm the system, which for the average person is at least once a day when they turn it off in the morning. This happens even if the camera is nowhere in the vicinity of the keypad. I understand that someone out there might want the feature, but for the love of god why can you not turn it off?

I wish you could disable video on disarm.

It's incredibly weird. The only place where it's beneficial is to cover the front door/living room, which also frequently doubles as a guest bedroom. I wouldn't even be as worried about the countless videos of me turning off the alarm in my underwear if I could give a housesitter a basic permissions set, but right now you can't even do that. Boggles the mind.

Thank you for the feedback. Yes it's intended so that you would have a record of who's disarming your system. Of course, with the shutter, you would know if a recording was in progress.

And don't forget, the other piece for privacy is that all recordings are encrypted, both in transit and at rest. So nobody, not even SimpliSafe's own employees, can access your system without your permission.

But yes, the option of whether or not to record at all certainly makes sense as a feature request. I'll be sure to pass it on to our devs.

@davey_d I am the only one here, so I don't need the recording.

@tls I hear that. I'm just saying, that was the intention. For example, let's say an unwanted person figured out your PIN. If they got into your house, you'd still know that they were there.

I think the other issue here is the wording is not just misleading, it's completely false:

The privacy shutter only opens with your permission

You have a support page entry that lists quite a few situations in which the privacy shade will open and it will record whether you want it to or not. Can you please change or strike this language from the description? I don't think there's a person alive who would agree that what you all have in the marketing description is accurate, even if SimpliSafe's logic is well meaning.

@davey_d It's obviously been requested a ton by now, any reason why they won't do it?

This would be a matter of building out a new function that wasn't there before. It's certainly possible. I just don't have any further news about it right now.
